{"id":136,"date":"2010-06-01T07:03:26","date_gmt":"2010-06-01T12:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.historicjoplin.org\/?p=136"},"modified":"2010-06-01T07:03:26","modified_gmt":"2010-06-01T12:03:26","slug":"globe-article-covers-the-closing-of-howsmons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.historicjoplin.org\/?p=136","title":{"rendered":"Globe Article Covers the Closing of Howsmon&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Friday, the <em>Joplin Globe<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joplinglobe.com\/dailybusiness\/x2023224179\/End-of-an-era-Howsmon-s-merges-forces-with-Scott-Rice\">covered the shuttering of Howsmon&#8217;s Office Supply and Furniture Company<\/a>, a 47 year old business.\u00a0 As the article notes, Howsmon&#8217;s began with the purchase of Spurgeon&#8217;s Bookstore, which originally was Osterloh&#8217;s Bookstore that had opened in 1890.\u00a0 Osterloh, in addition to selling books, was also an avid photographer and is responsible for a number of early Joplin photographs.\u00a0 While Howsmon&#8217;s didn&#8217;t remain in the original building for long, Osterloh&#8217;s bookstore was located on the 300 block just a few yards north of its towering neighbor, the Connor Hotel.\u00a0 Below is a photograph capturing a busy day in front of the bookstore:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/24317830@N04\/4653143614\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Osterloh's Bookstore\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4051\/4653143614_80255bbdb6.jpg\" alt=\"Osterloh's Bookstore\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Osterloh&#39;s larger sign, obstructed by its neighboring theater&#39;s sign, advertised book and office supplies.
